Popcorn Words
This is your child’s “Popcorn Word” folder.  Popcorn words are what we call high frequency words.  We call them popcorn words because they keep "popping up" in our reading and writing. Students do not usually learn to read and write words by just memorizing them.  They need to have meaningful encounters with the words in order to build connections to other words they already know.  Through elements in the classroom like Morning Message, Predictable Charts, Word Walls, Leveled Readers, Games, and Songs these connections are made.
Students should practice their popcorn words for a few minutes each night.  He/she should be able to read the words automatically (not by sounding them out).
